FAQ’s

What is the definition of EnsemBle theater?

An Ensemble is a group of individuals dedicated to collaborative creation, committed to working together consistently over years to develop a distinctive body of work and practices.

Do you hire outside your EnsemBle?

Yes! For over 25 years, we have used incredible talent outside our Ensemble and Artistic Affiliates.

Are you an Equity producing theater? What CAT contract do you use?

We are an AEA theater utilizing the Tier II contract.

Weren’t you called “ATC” in Lincoln Square?

Yes, for 11 years, our Ensemble went by the name, American Theater Company (ATC), and performed in Lincoln Square. Founder Jim Leaming and a volunteer construction crew built that theater. In March 2009, we reclaimed our original name, American Blues Theater (ABT). We currently perform at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater in Lincoln Park.

Is the ABT EnsemBle the original group?

Yes! Our Ensemble is the 2nd-oldest Equity Ensemble theater in Chicago. We’ve steadily added new members throughout the years too. Our multi-generational and disciplined 36-member Ensemble has 400+ combined years of collaboration on stage.
