WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST
MANNY BUCKLEY (Philips) is a proud Artistic Affiliate of American Blues Theater. He was last seen in The Cherry Orchard at Raven Theatre. Other productions include The Piano Teacher at Next Theatre, Lost Boys Of Sudan (u/s) at Victory Gardens Theatre, The Rant at Mary Arrchie Theatre, Of Mice And Men at Steppenwolf Theatre, and Streamers and The Last Days Of Judas Iscariot at Gift Theatre, the latter being remounted at Victory Gardens Theatre. Manny has also performed at the Kennedy Center and in the English Language Theatre Festival in Bratislava, Slovakia.
SARAH BURNHAM (Chorus) joined the Ensemble of American Blues Theater in 2011. She’s a Chicago-based designer and production manager. Her most recent work includes properties design for Peninsula Players: The Importance of Being Earnest, A Few Good Men; American Blues Theater: Rantoul and Die; Steep Theater: Festen, Lakeboat ; Theater Seven of Chicago: The Chicago Landmark Project, Hunting and Gathering, Mimesophobia; Northwestern University: State(s) of America: The Regina Taylor Project. Technical Direction and Production Management include shows such as Rantoul and Die, It’s a Wonderful Life: Live at the Biograph!, and Tobacco Road.
JOHN BYRNES (Fayette) happily makes his ABT debut with this Waiting For Lefty. Recent credits include This (Theater Wit), Port (Griffin), Thieves Like Us (The House), All My Sons (Timeline) and The Overwhelming (Next). John has also appeared in Frankenstein, The Hairy Ape, Our Town, 4.48 Psychosis, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof and numerous other projects for The Hypocrites, with whom he is a proud company member. Regional credits include work with Montana Shakespeare In the Parks, the Minneapolis and New York fringe festivals, the Huntington Theatre, New Rep, Boston Playwrights’ and the Vineyard Playhouse. When not on stage, John can be found teaching theater at various venues throughout Chicagoland.
RINSKA CARRASCO-AMAZING (Edna) graduated from Columbia College’s Directing program and is proud to be a part of Gray Talent, Collaboraction, Teatro Vista and a new voice at 2nd story. She’s done some pretty cool plays around Chicago, top favorites include, In Arabia We’d All Be Kings were she was nominated for Jeff, as supporting actress and won for ensemble, she’s also played Shaquille O’Neil in Shaquille O’Neil And Christian Laettner Discuss written by Pulitzer Prize nominee Kris Diaz and has recently been seen in Silk Road’s production of Scorched, as Young Nawal and Za Guide. Her next big project is Fishmen at Goodman AD’ing The Amazing Eddie Torres. DEREK GASPAR (Joe) is thrilled to be working with American Blues for the first time on such a great play. Around Chicago he has worked with Timeline, Next, Court, Pine Box, Trap Door, the dearly departed Greasy Joan & Co. and Uma productions – where he was an artistic associate. A recent graduate of DePaul’s MFA Acting program, he originated the role of Marc in Carlos Murillo’s play Mayday Mayday Tuesday (penned for the MFA ’11 class) directed by Dexter Bullard. When he is not acting he is having fun with his wife and two “blondie” daughters! He is proudly represented by Paonessa Talent Agency.
JEREMY GLICKSTEIN (Ensemble) is thrilled to be making his debut with American Blues Theater. He was last seen on stage in The Hot L Baltimore directed by Tina Landau at Steppenwolf Theatre. TERRY HAMILTON (Fatt/Grady) is very happy to be making his debut at American Blues Theater with Waiting For Lefty. Hamilton is an associate Artist at TimeLine Theatre since 2005. TimeLine credits include, The Front Page, Mastering The Art, Frost/Nixon, This Happy Breed, Pravda, Martin Furey’s Shot, Copenhagen, The General From America, Fiorello–(twice), The Widower’s Houses, Weekend, Not Enough Air and The History Boys. ZACHARY KENNEY (Sid) is excited to make his American Blues Theater debut. Most recently, he performed in The Gospel According To James (Victory Gardens Theatre), directed by Chuck Smith. Other credits include Mary’s Wedding (Indiana Repertory Theatre), The Farnsworth Invention and Not Enough Air (TimeLine Theatre) and the U.S. tour of Letters Home (Griffin Theatre). At the Theatre School at DePaul University, Zach played Orpheus in Eurydice and Rusty in Hurrah For The Next Who Dies, directed by former ABT Artistic Director Damon Kiely. A San Francisco native, Zach studied at American Conservatory Theatre. As part of A.C.T.’s New Plays Program, he originated the title role in The Actor by Horton Foote (in collaboration with the Royal National Theatre, London).
WARREN LEVON (Agate) joined ABT as an Artistic Affiliate in 2011. He was last seen on the ABT stage in RIPPED 2010 series. Since then he has garnered roles in Sketchbook Festival (Collaboraction), Doo Lister’s Blues (National Pastime Theatre), and Radio Golf (Black Theater Alliance Award nomination for Best Featured Actor, Raven Theatre) among other small endeavors that keep the bills paid
. He is also a company member with Halcyon Theatre. MECHELLE MOE (Miller) is a founding member of The Hypocrites, and works as an actor, director and teaching artist. She has been featured at TimeLine: The Children’s Hour, Paradise Lost, Not Enough Air, The Front Page; The Hypocrites: The Bald Soprano, Angels In America, The Glass Menagerie, Arcadia, etc; Court Theater: What The Butler Saw; and, Griffin Theater: Stage Door (Jeff Nominated, Actress in Principal Role), Letters Home. She has also worked with Lifeline, A Red Orchid, Steppenwolf, Writers, among others. JOHN MOHRLEIN (Dr. Barnes) joined American Blues Theater Ensemble in 1997. He’s appeared in Half of Plenty, It’s a Wonderful Life, A View from the Bridge, Strictly Dishonorable, American Dead, The Hairy Ape, A Lie of the Mind, Endgame, American Buffalo, The Skin of Our Teeth, The Threepenny Opera, A Stone Carver (Joseph Jefferson nomination for Best Actor, After Dark Award for Outstanding Performance), and director on Catch-22. Other credits: The Glass House at the Art Institute of Chicago; nine productions at Goodman Theatre, Cripple of Inishmaan, Heart of a Dog, and Murder of Cardinal Tosca at Northlight Theatre. SUZANNE PETRI (Stenographer) joined the Ensemble of American Blues Theater in 1998. She played Grandma in the Jeff nominated Tobacco Road with ABT. She was seen in Zorba, Twelfth Night, Book of Mercy, Kid-Simple, The Hairy Ape, Two Rooms, A Lie of the Mind, The Threepenny Opera, The People’s Temple and Oklahoma! She has appeared in many Bernie Sahlins productions for the Poetry Foundation including Lysistrata and Under Milk Wood. She performed her cabaret tribute to “Marlene Dietrich at Millennium Park, She torched the place” (Chicago Tribune,) was honored with the After Dark Award for Outstanding Cabaret Artist, Gold Coast Award, and is a founding member of the Chicago Cabaret Professionals and President for thirteen years. Her film and TV work includes WEDNESDAY’S CHILD, LAC DU FLAMBEAU, JUST VISITING, MILWAUKEE, MINNESOTA, EARLY EDITION and EVIL HAS A FACE. Suzanne and her husband Bob Breuler (SuzBo Entertainment) are produced the original musical Duo at Steppenwolf Upstairs Theater.
ANDREW BURDEN SWANSON (Clayton) recently completed his fifth semester at Columbia College Chicago with a focus in acting. He hopes to graduate within the upcoming decade. He is thrilled to be the Resident Playwright and Head of Development for Jackalope Theatre Company. Most recently, Andrew stage managed and assistant directed Jackalope’s production of Naomi Wallace’s Slaughter City. Chicago Acting credits include: The Death of Print w/ Jackalope Theatre, Effie w/ The Neapolitans, A Streetcar Named Desire w/ Writers’ Theatre (where he is excited to be assistant directing Stuart Carden this coming January), and Port w/ Griffin Theatre. GWENDOLYN WHITESIDE (Florrie) joined the Ensemble of American Blues Theater in 1997 and serves as the Producing Artistic Director. Theater: Mary’s Wedding (Mary), Rabbit Hole (Izzy), A Christmas Carol (Belle/Fan), and Our Town (Emily) at Indiana Repertory Theater, work at American Blues Theater, Lookingglass Theatre, Victory Gardens Theater, Chicago Dramatists, Northlight Theatre, About Face Theatre, Chicago Humanities Festival, and Los Angeles theaters. Television: COLD CASE, SIX FEET UNDER, DAWSON’S CREEK, JACK & JILL, CUPID and recurring role on THE EDUCATION OF MAX BICKFORD. She helped lead the transition during the rebirth of ABT in 2009. She ushered in the annual Blue Ink Playwriting Award, Blueprint Play Development, and implemented community outreach as central to the company’s mission. She led the company from zero funding to a quarter-million dollar organization in two years. She’s served two terms on the theater panel for the National Endowment for the Arts. She sits on the National Board of Directors for Network of Ensemble Theaters. She is a cum laude graduate of Northwestern University and received her MFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was included in the top 5 performances (Mary’s Wedding) of 2010 by Indianapolis Star. She’s received seven (7) Joseph Jefferson Awards, Citations, and nominations. WHO’S WHO
CLIFFORD ODETS (Playwright) was born to a working-class family in 1906. Raised in the Bronx, New York, Odets left school at the age of fourteen and pursued an artistic career, much to the chagrin of his father who wanted his son to continue in the family printing business. Young Odets worked as an actor and writer in vaudeville, radio and stage. With the Group Theatre, a socialist and leftist ensemble of artists, Odets first achieved fame as a playwright with his 1935 short play, Waiting for Lefty. He continued writing until his death with varying success for New York and Hollywood with plays like Awake and Sing, Till the Day I Die, Paradise Lost, and the screenplay The General Died at Dawn. Odets’ plays are notable for their Depression-era, working-class characters in search of a dream, working to fight against the oppressive injustices existing in their world. Odets stated that his plays are concerned with “the struggle not to have life nullified by circumstances, false values, anything.”

KAYLA MAE ANDERSON (Assistant Director) is a recent graduate of Columbia College Chicago’s directing program, where she directed, wrote, and performed in many pieces. Her favorite and most recent being Rag and Bone by Noah Haidle. Recent credits include directing for The Naked 24-Hour Project at Stage773, her solo performance Of Mice, and directing Ceremony by Mark Schultz at the side project theatre. She wants you to know how fortunate she feels to be working on such a groundbreaking rendition of this American classic. KELLI MARINO (Dramaturg) is an Artistic Affiliate of American Blues Theater where she is the Literary Associate and Dramaturg. She recently dramaturged The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek with Eclipse Theatre, and three new plays for Stage Left Theatre’s Leapfest: Thirst; Make Sure It’s Me; and Underneath; and A Red Orchid Theatre’s Youth Ensemble piece, My iPhone and Me. This summer, she worked in Colorado on One for My Baby; Dames at Sea; Nixon’s Nixon; The Odd Couple: Female Version;and The Music Man at The Little Theatre of the Rockies. For the 2010-11 season, Kelli was the dramaturg for Remy Bumppo’s productions of Night and Day; The Importance of Being Earnest; and The Goat, or Who is Sylvia; as well as A Red Orchid’s productions of The Mandrake and Craig Wright’s new adaptation of The Iliad. Kelli has worked with Chicago’s Court, TimeLine, Northlight, Collaboraction, and Citadel Theatres. Kelli holds an M.A. from the University of Arizona and a B.A. from the University of Northern Colorado. She is the Regional Vice President of the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of America—Chicago and the proud coordinator of Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Artistic and Technical Team.
JONATHAN NOOK (Stage Manager) is excited about working with American Blues Theater for the first time. RUPERT PRINISKI (Assistant Stage Manager) is glad to be joining the team at American Blues for the first time. He has been working in Chicago for the last four years at companies like Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Northwestern University Opera, and Court Theatre. Regional credits include B St. Theatre, (Sacramento CA,) Sacramento Theatre Company, (Sacramento CA,) Theatre West Virginia (Beckley WV,) and The Lost Colony (Manteo NC.) Rupert is a proud graduate of Northern Michigan University.
KORTNEY KWONG HING (Assistant Dramaturg) has her B.A. in Theatre with a concentration in directing from Columbia College. A few directing credits include No Exit and Dead Man’s Cell Phone. She recently dramaturged The Neapolitans Off-Chekhov Festival. Up next Kortney will be stage managing Keep a Song in Your Soul directed by Andrea Dymond. She is a member of Nothing Without a Company.
CHRIS RICKETT (Fight Director) is a proud member of the MFA ’11 Acting Ensemble of The Theatre School at DePaul. Recent fight direction includes About Face Theatre’s production of Pony and Redtwist Theatre’s Bug (both with fight collaborator Derek Gaspar). He also choreographer the violence for The Theatre School production of Cabaret. He is an Actor Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors and a member of Actors’ Equity Association.
JILL SWARTZMILLER (Business Manager) recently worked on the new musical White Noise. Most recently she was the General Manager of Victory Gardens Theater, and Company Manager of Don’t Dress for Dinner at the Royal George. Before relocating to Chicago, she toured the country as the Company Manager of several tours including August: Osage County, Movin’ Out, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Little Shop of Horrors.
