6 AMERICAN BLUES THEATER If I weren’t a designer: At one point in my life, I would have said I’d be in a rock band. At another point in my life, I’d have said I’d be an actor. Now, I would just be a writer. I think I’m getting old. Childhood nickname: Linz? That’s the only nickname I think I’ve had. Except when I was a child, my mother would occasionally yell “Lindsay Toodles” when I was on the playground, and I would pray for the earth to open up and swallow me whole. Best career advice I’ve received: My first agent was terrible. She never called anyone back. She generally irritated everyone she came in contact with. But she gave me one good piece of advice. One time I confessed to her that I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. She looked me straight in the eyes and told me to never say that out loud again. I asked why, and she said “Because I have no idea what I’m doing either, and when you say it, it reminds me.” Favorite part of the job: I love collaborating with people and coming up with new ideas and fresh approaches to plays. When things are really sparking between inspired people working together, there’s nothing better. Worst part of the job: Sometimes, the meetings that result in extended discussions about mundane details of things that don’t really affect me are kind of dull. I dream about the life I could be living while people discuss the size of hand props. How I made my first dollar: I lied my way into working as a disc jockey at a radio station when I was 14 years old. I worked the shift from 4am – 8am on Sunday mornings. My poor parents would wake up and drive me. But I was thrilled for the job. Last meal I’d want: Boy, this is a tough one. Either some amazing sushi omokase, chicken parmagiana, or a really good North Carolina barbecue sandwich with slaw and hush puppies. Favorite item of clothing: I’ve had the same winter coat for almost 20 years, and I bought it in Santa Barbara, California, which is a terrible place to buy a winter coat. It’s this combination of a leather jacket, and hoodie sweater underneath. The leather jacket part is really a mess, but the hoodie underneath is really warm and cozy, and the hood always warms my bald head up, no matter where I am. If I could invent one thing: It would be something that would allow me to be in multiple places at the same time, and make sure that everyone was happy. One of my hidden talents: I can help you get rid of earworms (those songs that you can’t get out of your head because they’re so catchy). The trick is to either to sing the theme to “Mission Impossible” or to sing the radio jingle from this restaurant on Cape Cod. “Hey, where ya going? Going to Thompson’s Clam Bar, cause that’s where the tastiest clams are!” It works when I sing it in person, just remind me when you see me!
